Success Stories

Pictured to the right are just a few of the many DTC participants whose lives were saved as a result of receiving free vascular screenings.

Elaine Gairy

“I went to the Dare to C.A.R.E. program to get my husband to go because his father died of vascular disease. We live on the Eastern Shore, and Dare to C.A.R.E. held a program at the Kent Island Library. My husband has high blood pressure, and my daughter had encouraged him to go. I was the first one to get the screening test, and I was shocked when Dr. Martin told me I had a blocked carotid artery. I had no symptoms or risk factors. Dr. Martin explained that I was at risk for a stroke or a heart attack, and that I needed surgery. After a little research, I discovered that right here at Anne Arundel Medical Center we have the best vascular team in the country! I had the surgery just a few weeks later, and remarkably the next day I went home. After just a few weeks recuperation, I felt great."

“The Dare to C.A.R.E. program literally saved my life! Someone must have been looking down over my shoulder that day. You know, everybody seems to be telling you what to do for cancer — get a mammogram and a colonoscopy, but I’m encouraging everyone to get a vascular screening. I have told everyone I know about it. The test is quick, simple, and painless. It’s worth doing – it could save your life. Please don’t wait until it's too late.”
